Why use Real-Time 1:1 Coaching?
In coaching leaders in business, we tend to restrict coaching to the ‘practice court’. In doing so, we miss the very best opportunities to develop their potential - before, during and after critical instances - the interactions (meetings, reviews, presentations) that occur with their people. A real-time approach makes coaching even more effective because we see the leader perform in the real life context of their own environment. As such, the learning and behaviour change achieved has more real impact, is more sustainable and is delivered with more speed.

What exactly is Real-Time 1:1 Coaching?
What makes Real-Time 1:1 Coaching different from a standard coaching approach is the focus on near immediate feedback on observed behaviour in context.
Once we have confirmed that appropriate chemistry exists between coach and coachee and a contract has been established, the coach and coachee spend a day together, which has been planned to give the best chances for development. After a 1:1 session the coachee proceeds with their day, receiving feedback and coaching after each significant interaction. Dependent on the observations made on the day and the goals of the coachee, the coaching programme is adapted to address the identified developmental needs.

Where is Real-Time 1:1 Coaching most appropriate?
The easy answer is everywhere, the reason being that feedback is essential to achieve the highest levels of performance no matter how good a performer is already.
Particular areas where Real-Time 1:1 is most appropriate include:

  • Leaders undertaking a transition to a more challenging or significant role.
  • Senior leaders in all areas as they often struggle to get timely and accurate feedback they can trust. A senior leader’s attitude and behaviour has a dramatic influence on the climate of their part of the organisation and a huge impact on employee engagement.
  • Roles requiring extensive influencing and stakeholder management.
In all of these instances, the impact of the coachee’s communication, conscious and unconscious, can be influenced most strongly by this process. Most Real-Time Coaching occurs face to face but it is also highly applicable where substantive communication occurs by teleconference.
